Pergola installation in Tatum RanchThe City of Phoenix's residential patio cover guideline covers one-story structures up to 12 feet tall, open on two or more sides and attached to the house, and it requires construction drawings and a permit. The City's list of work exempt from permit includes one-story detached accessory structures up to 200 square feet of total floor area, and it names ramadas and gazebos as similar uses. Neither document names pergolas, so we confirm with the City of Phoenix whether your pergola needs a permit before we build.
The same exempt-work list says that when utilities are run to a detached structure that's otherwise exempt, the utilities still need a permit. That's the part that matters when your pergola gets a fan, lights or an outlet, and our electrician handles it.
The City also says an exemption doesn't allow work that breaks its codes or ordinances, and its patio cover guideline asks for a plot plan showing setbacks and lot coverage. We check where your posts land relative to the property lines before we dig.
